Did you know that there were Human Zoos on display in Europe and America from the 1870’s to the 1950’s? These public exhibits of humans,often called Negro Villages, usually showed indigenous people in a so-called natural or primitive state. The displays often emphasized the cultural differences between Europeans of Western civilization and non-European peoples.

Above is a photo from Amsterdam Holland around 1890, of an African child in one of these Human Zoo exhibits,being fed like an animal by white spectators.

Flamingo Massacres

The name says it all for Katie Eary’s collection – a virtual explosion of fuschia, reds, and oranges that pulled the eye almost out of its socket.

Print was the name of the game, divided between full garment flamingos (some wearing Nicki Minaj style pink wigs) and cheetah fur print. It wasn’t aimed at the retiring wallflower either, with suit jackets, shirts, t-shirts, shorts and trousers combined to either match or clash between animal prints.

Interspersing the menswear was women’s swimwear in pink and red – tiny, glamorous pieces evocative of the 70s, matched with floaty blouses and headscarves – seductive companions to such bold, sometimes kitschy, statements such as blood orange cheetah print trousers. Knitwear in the collection’s key colours ,as well as t-shirts that looked like Tequila Sunrises, made for covetable, casual separates that’ll fit happily into the high street and adhered to her ethos of “walking a line between Vice and Vogue”. Youthful, fresh and audacious, Eary impressed with her command of graphic and colour.
